Significance of Kunai Knives in Japanese Culture

The kunai is of Japanese origin and is traditionally used both as a weapon and as an offensive tool. These knives were brought from Japan to Korea by forces sent to assist its ally.

They became so important to Korea that the word yoongi, which translates to ‘kunai,’ was adopted as the Korean word for weapons or things used for war. Korean soldiers fought with both actual kunai and wooden replicas in order to ensure their effectiveness when on the battlefield.

It is a tool used primarily by martial artists. Often made from metal, in some cases bamboo, the kunai is often thrown at opponents or grasped and thrust into a target. They have been the weapons of choice for ninjas in the popular Naruto anime series.

The kunai knives originated with ninjas during feudal Japan as a weapon to be tossed at foes in order to cause them to harm from a distance or broken on contact with their body armor and shields. The knives then became associated with ninjas and began appearing as such in video games, films and other media outside of Japan.

These knives are still used by martial arts practitioners, but are typically made from plastic and thus lack the sharpness of their older steel counterparts. A trained martial artist can still use them to good effect, though.

What Are Kunai Knives Made Of?

Kunai blades have been made from a variety of materials in the past and present. Although some examples of steel kunai exist in Japan today, usually for ceremonial purposes only, most kunai are made from either plastic or wood. The first kunai were made entirely out of metal as well as stone and pottery variants exist as well. Kunai are most typically made from either metal or wood.

It is commonly used as a weapon during unarmed combat training, Songun (military) training, and even as a tool for everyday tasks such as bringing water from the well to watering plants, clearing brush from driveways, or other chores requiring small blades. Although not an official weapon, it has been known by everyone throughout Japanese history up until today in certain situations such as self-defense.

Besides destroying fences, they also broke through castle walls to make holes. Ninjas can break a wall with this only tool if the wall is not thick enough. They used this to directly stab their Samurai warriors’ stomachs when fighting with them. To catch their enemies, ninjas sometimes applied poison to the edges of their blades.

So what makes the kunai an optimal ninja tool? Well, apart from being cost-effective and lightweight, it can be concealed in the hand easily to surprise your opponent with a well-placed throw. It can also serve as either a melee or ranged weapon — making it useful in all situations! What more could anyone ask for?
